Montpellier

Consistently voted by French people as the city they would most like to live in, it is vibrant, cosmopolitan, young (big student population) with a huge boulevard at the centre where people congregate for coffee and are entertained by buskers.  Plenty to do – but a good way to explore it is by doing one of the treasure hunts (available in English and French) put on by the tourist office.  They take around 90 minutes.  The tourist office is well organised, full of good ideas and has French and English speakers.  Worth looking at their website for ideas:

About 30 minutes away by car.
