About 50 minutes away by car, Orange is more of a one-trick pony than Arles or Nimes, having as its main attraction its famous amphitheatre… but what a trick! It is well worth a visit and needs a whole afternoon to do it justice. Like Arles and Nimes, Orange’s amphitheatre is still used – for an annual opera festival – but unlike Arles and Nimes, the banked seating (capacity 10,000) of the amphitheatre has been carved out of a hill with the stage at the bottom of the hill.
